Twitter for Orkut users

If you’re reading this then i assume that you’re most likely an Orkut.com user. Let me introduce you to another Social networking site “Twitter”.

What is Twitter?

Twitter also falls into the category of micro-blogging i.e things that you’d like to blog, but are ridiculously small( <=140 to be precise). Think of it as an SMS service for the web.

What is  a Tweet?

A message is called a “Tweet”. It is also a verb :“I tweeted this last night”.  Like Orkut or Facebook when you update your status, all your friends will be notified. In twitter terminology your friends are called your followers. But you can control things like who can follow you and if they’re allowed to read your tweets.

Here’s a sketch explaining twitter (I’m bad at drawing so please bear with me)

twitter

Likewise when the people you follow “tweet”, you’ll receive them.

Then if you find it interesting  you ca share it among your followers by “Re-tweeting” it. Much like forwarding an E-mail or a SMS.

Eg Bob: Check this out its funny –> funnylink.com. Alice happens to be a following Bob.

she can Re-Tweet it saying

RT @Bob Check this out its funny –> funnylink.com. Now all those who follow Alice will get this tweet indirectly from bob.

@Replies:

Its also possible to have a conversation with fellow tweeple using @twittername

Alice : @Bob that link is funny. lol !

Direct Message:

Sometimes bob may to say something to Alice privately (wonders what that is!!), then he’ll send Alice a Direct Message. The only difference is that while an @reply is public a DM is private and can only seen by the receiver.

Bob: d Alice Did you get my letter?

My 2cents About Twitter:

The internet is about communicating whether its IM/CHAT/Email or plain advertisement. Twitter has made it ultrafast and efficient to do all those stuff in one place. You can easily share interesting blog posts links and information that you find interesting. So go tweet your heart out.
